Make a lasting difference with a gift in your Will

By choosing to leave a gift in your Will you are personally ensuring that Hospice Waikato will be there for future generations when they need it most.

When Kay’s father was diagnosed with cancer she had no idea there was a service available that would be so dedicated to providing quality to the remainder of her father’s life.

Hospice was there for her family to support them through an understandably difficult time, and the feeling of knowing her father was cared for so deeply by Hospice will never be forgotten.

Their experience is what led Kay and John to leave a gift to Hospice Waikato in their Will. In doing so they have given the gift of care to other families who will benefit from the services that Hospice Waikato provides during a difficult time.

“Like us, a lot of people I have come across had no idea about Hospice services. Until you have had dealings with Hospice, you don't know how good they are,” says Kay.

Kay and John

According to Kay and John, choosing to leave a bequest to Hospice Waikato was “an easy decision to make”.

“You’re not expected to leave everything in your bequest – it could be a small amount, but it all adds up,” says Kay.

There is no easier way of making a difference in your community. The simple fact is, that without the generosity of every day New Zealanders, many of the charities we love and support wouldn’t exist. Bequests are essential for ensuring the work of Hospice Waikato will continue.

Frances' gift to the Te Awamutu Community

A special Hospice ceremony took place recently in Te Awamutu when a plaque was unveiled to commemorate the bequest of the Coronation Buildings to Hospice by Frances Kenny.

Mrs Kenny was the only child of Mr and Mrs Frank Brooks of Te Awamutu. Mr Brooks was the local chemist and had his pharmacy in one of the shops in Coronation Building (he owned the building, and the family think that he actually built the building). Mr Brooks also started the Te Awamutu Historical Society.

Mrs Kenny had one child, Robert, who passed away two years before Mrs Kenny – Robert had looked after his mother for many years. Mrs Kenny was a long-serving Plunket Nurse, in the Te Awamutu and surrounding areas, and was an identity in the community.

This building was gifted to Hospice Waikato by the family of Frances Kenny, including her parents Frank and Tui Brooks and her son Robert Kenny, members of a public-spirited Te Awamutu family since 1922

Mrs Kenny left the Coronation Buildings to Hospice Waikato, as part of her estate.

The plaque was unveiled by Sharon Watkin, a cousin of Mrs Kenny, and John Erkkila, Chair of the Hospice Foundation. Craig Tamblyn, CEO of Hospice, also spoke on the work of Hospice.

Part of Mrs Watkin’s speech is printed below, giving further insight into the life of Frances Kenny.

Thank you for inviting me to be part of honouring a bequest from a member of my family.

These buildings are my uncle’s legacy. When he passed on, the buildings were then bequeathed to Frances, unfortunately Robert died before her. This then became her wish in her Will to bequeath the buildings to Hospice Waikato. This is a wonderful gesture for a great compassionate cause. Her only request was to have plaque to commemorate her bequest.

Over the many years, Frances and I formed a very close relationship, she became my ‘mother’ figure after mum died.

On behalf of the Frances Kenny Estate and family, it gives me great pleasure to unveil the plaque on her behalf. I’m sure that Frances and Uncle Frank will be looking down on us today, smiling and happy in the knowledge that they are forever a part of Te Awamutu history. They served their community well and fully deserve this recognition which Frances has instigated.
